Los Angeles is a sports-lover’s paradise. Not only are there numerous teams and sports franchises, the city is known for hosting mega-large sporting events, such as two Summer Olympic Games, several Super Bowl games as well as world and collegiate championship events. Now, thanks to the nonprofit LAVO and millions of supporters, one new event may be added to the list.
In early April, the Los Angeles Volleyball Organization launched a bid for LA to become host of the 2022 Gay Games. If granted, this will be the first time in the 34-year history of the games that the event will be held in the City of Angels.
The bid will be a major collaborative effort between multiple communities, and will include the support of powerful and influential organizations such as the City of West Hollywood, Visit West Hollywood Tourism Office, Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board, the Mayor of the City Los Angeles’ Office, the Sports and Entertainment and Sports Commission of the City of Los Angeles.
LAVO, founded in 2010, is centered on promoting interest in the sport of volleyball while fostering teamwork, sportsmanship and an appreciation for health and wellness. In seeking to broaden its community reach, the organization last year launched a successful multi-sport festival, which saw nearly 1,000 recreational athletes compete in tournaments at UCLA.
“We have a great leadership board, a fully operational event, creative, marketing and communications team, as well as a strong volunteer base,” said Ray Robles, President, LAVO. “We are uniquely positioned with the support of the LGBT community to handle the bidding process. It’s an exciting opportunity to work in a space that can lead the charge in awareness in inclusion. The work will be a labor of love.”
